Performers of Early Music
Gradualia is a vocal consort specialising in the music of the Renaissance.
The group was founded in October 2001, in order to explore the vocal repertoire
of the 15th to 17th Centuries. Our first concert took place in Magdalen College
Chapel, Oxford in February 2002, with works by Cornysh, Whyte and Alonso Lobo.
This was followed by a season of concert performances of large-scale Renaissance
mass settings, such as Gombert's Missa Tempore Paschali, and de Rore's Missa
Praeter rerum seriem in venues including Douai Abbey and Keble College
Chapel. In July 2003 the choir gave successful concerts in Greystoke Church,
Cumbria and York Minster. Apart from music from Byrd's Gradualia, the
choir specialises particularly in the works of Robert Whyte and the Eton
Choirbook. Upcoming concerts include an exploration of the contrapuntal music of
Renaissance Spain and Mexico, and a return visit to Douai Abbey.
The choir has recorded a CD of a selection of the
music covered in our first year of existence. Also, a CD of the music of Jean
Lhéritier is in production. For information please contact info@gradualia.co.uk
